چکیده

AIMS Most definitions of the metabolic syndrome (MS) employ waist circumference as an indicator of central obesity. However, several reports, mainly from Asia, argue that other indices, for example the waist/height ratio, are superior to waist circumference for identifying subjects with cardiovascular risk factors. We therefore investigated correlations between the predictive power of several anthropometric indices and risk factor accumulation (RFA) defined by the existence of two or more disorders among hypertension, dyslipidemia (high triglycerides and/or low levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol) and fasting hyperglycemia; each of which is a component of MS. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from a part of the Japan Public Health Center-based Cohort. A total of 315 men and 314 women, 51 to 70 years of age were examined for variables including waist and hip circumferences, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and lipids at an annual health check-up. RESULTS The prevalence of RFA increased almost linearly in parallel with increasing waist circumference up to 95 cm. Receiver operating characteristic analysis demonstrated that waist circumference was better than waist/ height ratio, waist/hip ratio and BMI at predicting RFA; but the differences were not statistically significant. However, even in the case of waist circumference, no clear cut-off point yields sufficiently high sensitivity and specificity simultaneously. CONCLUSIONS The predictive power of waist circumference was not inferior to those of other indices. Therefore, waist circumference is practically the most convenient measure for predicting MS because of its simplicity.

Determination of Obesity Indices Cut-Off Points for Predicting Metabolic Syndrome in Inactive College Students

Objective: The present this study aimed to determine the proper cut-off points for waist circumference (WC), Waist to height ratio (WHtR) and body mass index (BMI) for early predicting of metabolic syndrome among inactive college students. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 126 males (age 20.33±1.71) and 63 females (age 20.36±1.72) with inactive lifestyle parti...

Does the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol play a key role in predicting metabolic syndrome in the Iranian adult population?

Background: The low density lipoprotein cholestrol (LDL-C) has an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease but its association and predictive accuracy with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains controversial. The objective of this study was to investigate the association and predictive ability of LDL-C with MetS. Methods: We analyzed the data from a population-based cross-secti...

Waist-to-Height Ratio Is a Better Anthropometric Index than Waist Circumference and BMI in Predicting Metabolic Syndrome among Obese Mexican Adolescents

Objective. To identify the degree of association between anthropometric indices and components of metabolic syndrome (MS) and to determine optimal cut-off points of these indices for predicting MS in obese adolescents. Methods. A cross-sectional study with a sample of (n = 110) Mexican obese adolescents grouped by sex and the presence/absence of MS. BMI percentile, waist circumference (WC), and...

The Effect of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians ‘Abiy Tsom’ (Lent fasting) on Metabolic Syndrome Indices and Serum Electrolytes

Background: -Fasting, the voluntary abstention from all restricted foods, is a feature of many religions, and the putative health benefits have attracted both scientific and popular interest. There is no clear understanding that religious fasting has great effects on metabolic syndrome. There is little data available that provides information concerning Ethiopian Orthodox Christians fasting inf...
